The Museum was re-opened on October 24, 2008, after completion of redevelopment works in the building. The Museum consists of collections resulting from underwater archaeological excavations carried out in the seas of the Archipelago of Cape Verde, by the South African and Portuguese companies, Afrimar and Arqueonautas S.A. (mostly) respectively, and also found during the land excavations carried out in Cidade Velha (Ribeira Grande de Santiago).
