The duet formed by the islands of Santiago and São Vicente is usually called the Essence Islands. And rightly so, it must be said. Essence because in this island, more specifically in the now called Cidade Velha (Old Town), the Cape Verdean nation rose, first as a colony of the Portuguese empire, now as an independent, free, sovereign and democratic Republic.

Essence because the mystical concept and yet so real known as Morabeza ingrained in this pair of islands, certainly a word that was created to define this unmistakable essence which manifests itself in unparalleled music, in unique flavors, in vigorous writings, either in verse or prose, a hospitality that embraces us, seduces and integrates us from the very beginning.
